Whether it is an MP4 video uploaded to Kaltura or YouTube videos inserted in Kaltura My Media, faculty and staff have the option to upload a caption file (.srt or .dxp extension) or request captioning from the University captions service. If you have the actual caption file (.srt or .dxp format), you can easily upload it to the posted video in Kaltura (My Media).

  1. Access your course in Canvas
  2. Click the My Media link. The My Media page is displayed
  3. Find the posted video

  4. Click the drop down arrow beside Actions 
  5. Click Edit from the drop down menu 
  6. Within the Edit window, click the Captions tab

  7. Click the Upload captions file button to upload your caption (*.srt or *.dxp) file

  8. Click Browse to search for the *.srt or *.dxp file on your computer
  9. Select the Language drop down and choose English
  10. Click in the Label text box and type English
  11. Click Save to save your changes. You should see an Upload Completed! message
  12. Your uploaded captions file (*.srt or *.dxp) will be seen

  13. Click on the Details tab to add Tags for search terms
  14. Click Save to save all changes to captions and tags
  15. Click Go To Media
  16. The Closed Caption (CC) icon will now be visible on the posted YouTube video

  17. The tags will be visible in My Media as search terms

Video Analytics

All posted videos (MP4 or YouTube) will have analytic data through My Media showing number of visits, number of plays, average drop-off, and average view time percentages. This analytic data can be downloaded as a *.CSV (Excel) file.
